'kevin I' has released a set of
night textures for the LeMans track. Check here
for details. Anyway, I find the night textures oddly soothing, and I needed a nice sedate cover to go along with 'em. Enjoy.
Note: an alternate cover can be found in the 'nite-bonuspack'
collection.
Martin Smogbike brings us not one, but two track releases in a single day! Both are variations of
the Daytona International Speedway: Daytona is the tri-oval, and Rolex is the
tri-oval-plus-infield-road-course as it was run in 1967 (no damned chicanes!).
Note: You do not need to download
this, as it is already included with Ryk's track! It's merely presented here for completeness, though it's certainly
possible that some people look here for new track announcements. If that's the case, well...
A minor little club track of no great importance
to non-Italians...
No, I'm just kidding - it is (of course) probably the most-requested GPL track since day 1, a version of Monza that
includes the full banked oval. Finally, we can all relive the last 20 minutes of the movie Grand Prix, though
hopefully without that whole "flying off the banking into a tree" part!
After one of the more bizarre (and amusing)
limited track releases ever, Mark Beckman has released his long-awaited Riverside track to the general
public. Note that this is a different (and better!) version of Riverside than the one converted from Nascar
Legends - it's hillier, it looks cooler, and it's using the longer 1960 layout rather than the
1970ish (?) layout from the NL version.
Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last
week, you've probably heard that Roland Ehnström and an all-star team of track editors have put out the Le Mans
track. You know, the full-blown 24-hour version, circa 1967.
Here's a program set for a fine track that we've
neglected up until now. Personally, I've always liked the original cover, and saw no compelling reason to do a BAPOM
program set for the track, but several people have asked for one, so here goes!
I suppose this program does have one minor feature over the original - it's in English (which is certainly a feature if
you don't happen to understand Finnish!) This matches nicely with the generally-in-English nature of the 11 original GPL
track programs, at least in the US version of the game...
Martin Smogbike has created a track for those
people who really like AVUS, but have problems with all those tricky braking zones.
No, but seriously... According to the website, over 500 people have downloaded the track, and maybe some of those folks
would like a spiffy ol' BAPOM program set for the beastie. I know at least one guy would, 'cause he requested it!
André Streu brings us this devilish little beastie, which you can download here.
The "Halle-Saale-Schleife" is
(was?) a real track in East Germany that hosted F2 races between 1950 and 1953. The track is fairly flat, composed of a
collection of public roads, but without all the armco and such that characterize modern street circuits. No, this is a
throwback to the days when Men Were Men, and said men (apparently) didn't mind crashing into lampposts in the middle
of the road, sidewards, at 190MPH. Times have changed, and we should all be thankful for the invention of the
Shift-R!
Bill Cooper treats us to this delightful version of
the modern Sepang F1 Circuit. Bill
has taken the best track on the modern F1 schedule, created a GPL version of it, dressed it up in vintage billboards
and such, and then tweaked it to be more appropriate for our 1967 F1 machines by adding some slight banking to the turns
(since we don't have aerodynamics helping us out). The result is a very enjoyable track, well-suited for on-line racing.
Wow! Out of nowhere, Alain Bosco comes on the scene with this wonderful, polished effort.
Definitely one of the best of the third-party tracks, on par with Solitude, Gronland, and Vil. Download it now,
you'll be glad you did.
A program set for the new Croft track released by Sabre Team. While these British airport tracks
(Silverstone, Goodwood, etc.) aren't my personal cup of tea, there's no denying that it's an excellent realization of
the track. But then again,
I'm too busy dicking around in Photoshop to get any serious GPL practice in, so maybe it's just me! :) --jhb
A wonderful track! Finally, a track wide enough that even a bonehead
like myself can get around - and unlike Cleveland, you can actually see
where you're going!
Another one that we had somehow skipped over. At the time, I didn't
think to much of it, but I've recently decided it's pretty cool to race on, just because it's so wide and flat.
Sort of like a shorter, more sweeping version of Cleveland. Certainly a good place to work on your 4-wheel
drifting skills, without all that unpleasant "smashing into walls" business...
Don has whipped up a cover for the Night Silverstone
graphics modification to the original Silverstone track. This package doesn't
include maps or a newspaper pic, as they're not needed (the Silverstone originals
will still work nicely). The Night Silverstone mod can be found
here.
Note: an alternate cover can be found in the 'nite-bonuspack'
collection.
This is a complete BAPOM-style package for the Jamaica track.
It should be noted that the track is a
graphically-enhanced version of "Heartland Park" (it's got palm trees),
and as such is of questionable merit,
but there y'go...
Don was never entirely happy with his earlier covers for Homestead, Phoenix, and Portland, so he's put together some new
covers for those three tracks. The zip files contain the full BAPOM package (cover, map pages, newspaper picture,
etc.)
Note that this program comes complete with a 'serious'
cover, and an alternate, 'silly' cover. When you install it, you get to
choose which of the two covers you'll use. Pity it's such a
non-GPL-friendly track to drive!
While I haven't played it extensively, I'd say it's probably too fast and too banked for the F1 cars to
negotiate without severe 'bottoming' problems. It might be fun with the F3
cars, though...
