#96: Eastlndn (175KB) -

South Africa's first real-life Grand Prix circuit. It hosted GPs in 1962, 1963, and 1965 - but now you can pretend that it also got the '67 GP, instead of Kyalami.

#95: Malloval (194KB) -

Those Sabre Team guys are at it again with the pure-oval version Mallory Park - this version doesn't have the 'appendix'! One interesting feature: it's the only oval I can think of that is driven clockwise!

#94: Campalto (212KB) -

Zampedri Stefano has produced this lovely little (fantasy) drive through the Italian countryside.

campalto.jpg (44014 bytes)
#93: SanJose (220KB) -

A 1-mile, heavily-banked fantasy oval put out by Eric Bourgouin and the guys at Team Friendship. It has the distinction of being one of the few ovals (along with Daytona) directly created for GPL with all the modern tools. As such, it looks great!

New Thing! Eric has put out 'day' and 'night' textures for his track. I decided that the original black cover makes a decent 'night' cover, so I quickly whipped up a 'daytime' cover in white, for your downloading pleasure. (Though personally, I'd just choose one or the other - I can't see having both versions of the track installed simultaneously when there's 100+ tracks from which to choose your 64 favorites...)

#89-92: Last week, four new tracks were publicized on the Legends Central forums. All the tracks are by one (presumably busy!) guy, Martin Cooper. Aida and Hring are (by design) semi-realistic versions of those two real-life circuits. Rock is a manual re-do of the Rock Island circuit from Viper Racing (there is no converter, so settle down!), and Legends is a pure fantasy track containing a very entertaining mix of corners. It's also (imho) the best of the batch!

#88: Grnzland (244KB) -

André Streu brings us the third in the recent Trilogy of Historic German Racetracks, the Grenzlandring. This was a real-life road course along a public roads built around the town of Wegberg. Racing was abandoned on the circuit in 1952, and as soon as you start driving this track, you'll see why. Think "the long straight at the end of the Nurburgring, bent left sufficiently to form a 9km oval." Stunningly fast, and insanely dangerous, were this real life - thankfully it's not!

P.S. Even if you prefer the cover that comes with the track (as well you might - it's a good cover!), you may want to pick up my program set for the various map pages, and stick with the original page0.pbf. The choice is yours!

#87: Norisrng (225KB) -

Lou Magyar has released his first trick, Norisring, a real-life short (1.3mile) road course in Nuremberg, Germany. And the BAPOM crew has finally gotten off of it's collective fat asses long enough to put out a program set for this fine little beastie!

#86: AVUS'59 (288KB) -

Scott Przybylski has released his AVUS '59 track, a simple track for high-speed testing, etc. If you're familiar with his earlier AVUS beta, this version is considerably shorter (6.5 miles long), and there's apparently been a massive reforestration program in effect.

A note on the cover: this is an original AVUS cover from 1959. I've merely padded it slightly to match the aspect ratio of the GPL programs, and changed the dates to match the event dates used in GPL.

#85: Bounty (251KB) -

The Bounty Beach Sports Complex fantasy track has gone into final release. A wide track with plenty of 4-wheel drifting possibilities, it should make for some fine racing. Congratulations to JaiPaSai on a job well-done! Note: you don't need to download this program set, as it is already included in the track distribution.

#84: ThunderJet (198KB) -

Strava's funky little GPL realization of a modified-figure-8 slot car track. (It has a bridge - the cars don't actually crash into each other at the crossover point!) The scenery is simple, but the driving is a blast, and it should run well on any machine. Sort of reminds me of an easier version of Diamante, but again, what do I know?

tjet.jpg (36927 bytes)
#83: Ladle (228KB) -

A really fun-to-race track from Jon Jones. A zippy little 'club circuit'-feeling fantasy track. Fairly short, and easy to learn, with plenty of overtaking opportunities. Also, the track is pretty wide, which makes it possible to take several lines through 'The Bowl'.

ladle.jpg (41927 bytes)
#82: Austria (233KB) -

A lovely first-time effort by Ronnie Bresich, this is a pre-chicane version of the Österreichring that is either A) more accurate or B) less accurate than David Noonan's "Osring". It's certainly different, and there's little debate that it looks great! Note: you don't need to download this program set, as it's already included in the track distribution. You may, however, want to download the PTM, as that apparently fell on the cutting-room floor!

austria.jpg (50437 bytes)
#81: Cilce (216KB) -

Van Gossum's second release is a fantasy track through the Belgian forests. Good clean fun for all concerned!

cilce.jpg (36433 bytes)
#80: Harz (267KB) -

Christian Hedrich has released his Harz Mountain Circuit, and it is truly a wild ride! Someone has finally brought us the dangerous thrill of flying up a mountain road with no guardrails. A fantasy track, but truly inspired stuff, and well worth your download.

harz.jpg (42364 bytes)
#79: Jokimaa (241KB) -

Timo Nurmi's highly-recommended Jokimaa Circuit - a fictional track laid out on real Finnish roads. Many have proclaimed it "the Nurburgring of Finland", and who am I to dispute them? Enjoy picking the branches out of your teeth when you get to that section the first time!

jokimaa.jpg (46725 bytes)
#78: Dolomiti (279KB) -

Mark Beckman's latest and greatest - a fantasy track based in the Dolomite mountains of the Italian Alps. Good clean fun for all concerned!

dolomiti.jpg (46752 bytes)
#77: Mallory (230KB) -

Updated 7/25/2001 - Sabre Team's latest is that rarest of beasties, a non-US oval track... sort of. It's a squished oval (sort of like Darlington) with what appears to be an appendix sticking off of it. It's the damndest thing. Looks sort of like the head of a 5-iron...

mallory.jpg (34944 bytes)
#76: Schleiz (246KB) -

A new track has been released by 'Tormentor', an all-too-apropos name given my own personal success in driving this accursed circuit. But hey, I suck - your mileage may vary!

In any event, Schleizer Dreieck (or "Schleizer Triangle", according to the babelfish) is a real-live German race circuit, built on public roads. It's Germany's oldest race track, having held its first race in 1923. It's also a scary place to drive a 1967 F1 car - very fast long straights, followed by incredibly tight corners, sort of like Le Mans, only more so...

schleiz.jpg (45443 bytes)
#75: Lemas (210KB) -

Gilles Jausset has produced a fine version of the Mas du Clos circuit, a historic club track in France. You may find it too tight for the F1 cars, but F3/FG drivers should have a blast - lots of hills, and that's always a good thing!

lemas.jpg (50176 bytes)
#74: Maxland (197KB) -

Martin Svacha brings us this fine fantasy track. It's fairly similar to Ladle in layout, mostly flat (with one interesting 'dip'), and a pair of high-speed esses. Looks like fun!

maxland.jpg (44724 bytes)
#73: Snett67 (261KB) -

Track maestro Ryk (of Circuit Sopheve fame) pointed out that the Snetterton '67 track comes with inaccurate map pages (they're the same ones from the original Snetterton track). So we've put together the updated maps, and what the heck, we're throwing in a spiffy new cover at no extra charge!

(And yes, it is the same (albeit cleaned-up) artwork that we used on the Detroit cover. I like the art, it fits Snetterton better than Detroit, and I've long-since removed Detroit from my 'installed' tracks list. If it bothers you, you can always not install 'page0.pbf' and continue to the use the cover that comes with the track.)

snett67.jpg (39159 bytes)
#72: GOSSUM (226KB) -

Van Gossum brings us this modern fantasy track. And that's 'modern' in the good sense (wide road, lots of run-off, etc.) as opposed to being littered with fiddly little chicanes! While my own attempts to drive the track have been fraught with disaster, in no way should that be taken as a reflection on the track, merely as the expected outcome of my ham-fisted driving technique. Those of you who can actually drive these accursed machines should find that this track provides an excellent on-line racing experience. Or so I've been told!

gossum.jpg (41982 bytes)
#71: Hilver (218KB) -

A mysterious ski-goggled man, known only as 'rodsquad' has put out an interesting fantasy track called Hilverstone. Despite the implications of the name, the track has nothing whatsoever to do with Silverstone, except maybe for some borrowed textures. It's sort of like a slightly-harder version of Glacier, but not quite. However you choose to describe it, there's no denying it has a high 'whee'-factor!

hilver.jpg (44585 bytes)
#70: Diamante (218KB) -

Our old friend Mark Beckman whips out another of his consistently fun-to-drive tracks. This one's a fantasy track that was designed by Warren Bennett, originally named Carnival. The finished version drives substantially different (due to banking changes, etc.), hence the rename.

diamante.jpg (32621 bytes)
#69: Trenton (218KB) -

The guys over at Team Friendship have released their latest creation, a 1.5 mile oval with a twist. Literally. An impressive accomplishment, particularly given the near-complete lack of information available on this track. Should be fun for on-line racing.
